The Tashiro Family Residence

The former residence of an important Akizuki samurai family.

Between 1624-1684 several generations of the Taisho family held the position of chief vassal to Kuroda Nagaoki (the first lord of the Akizuki domain). This site is complete with all the typical components of a senior samurai residence.

With its main quarters, gate, storehouse, mud walls and garden, and is fairly large compared to Akizuki’s other remaining samurai residences.

The residence has suffered several fires but the present structure, which was moved to the current location in 1806, dates back to 1815. The Tashiro family donated the building to the city in 2003 and reconstruction works have since been carried out to return it to its post-Edo style appearance.
