Tanaka Tenmangu Shrine

Rustic shrine dedicated to the god of education and learning.

Tanaka Tenmangu Shrine is hidden on the edge of Akizuki. It was originally located even further into the mountains but was moved to its current site in 1664 by Kuroda Nagashige, lord of the Akizuki domain. The shrine became an important meeting spot in the lead up to the Akizuki rebellion as the commanding officer of the Akizuki rebels used it as a meeting place for his collaborators to gather. This is one of many Tenmangu Shrines in Japan and is linked to Fukuoka Prefecture’s Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. Dazaifu Tenmangu is the most important Tenmangu Shrine in Japan and the site of the grave of Michizane Sugawara, who was deified as the god of education and learning, Tenman Tenjin.
