Chosei-ji Temple

17th century temple dedicated to the supreme Buddha.

Chosei-ji Temple was built in 1600 by a high priest named Kutenra as a place of worship for Shakamuni Butsu (the supreme Buddha).

Ogata Shunsaku, an Edo period doctor who lived in Akizuki and a pioneer of an early vaccine for smallpox (well before Edward Jenner who is credited with the discovery of vaccination in 1796), is enshrined here alongside three family members of the Miyazaki Akizuki clan.

The ceiling of the Akibado Hall features the work of renowned painter Saito Shuho. He studied under Maruyama Okyo before he was recognized by the Akizuki daimyo and invited to be the painter of the domain.
