Akizuki Hachimangu

10th century shrine dedicated to the god of war.

An impressive staircase leads up to this shrine, built in honor of Hachiman, the Shinto god of war. The shrine, which dates back to the year 946, was patronised by the local Akizuki and Kuroda warlords and hosted eight centuries of pre-battle rituals for Akizuki samurai.

Despite being one of the quieter shrines it has a rich mix of buildings, kusunoki (camphor) trees, traditional paintings and a war memorial, which was built in the 20th century.
