Akizuki (Takatori-ware) Art Museum

One of the finest Takatori ware collections on display, covering 400 years of craft.

This private museum hosts a range of Takatori ware, which emerged in the 16th century.

After military incursions in the Korean peninsula with Toyotomi Hideyoshi (shogun and politician of the late Sengoku period), Kuroda Nagamasa brought a Korean potter back to Japan, who took the Japanese name Hachuzo Shigetada. Shigetada was then tasked with setting up the first kiln of its kind in Chikuzen, Fukuoka in 1606.

Since then Taktori has become the premier ceramic style of the area. The collection covers this timeline from early 17th century through to the end of the 19th century. Today the main Takatori kilns are found in nearby Koshiwara and in Fujisaki in Fukuoka Prefecture. Both of which remain very active.
