One of Akizuki’s oldest stores, selling traditional kuzu (arrowroot) sweets and coffee.
Hirokyu Kuzu Honpo sells a variety of kuzu sweets, preparations and other cooking ingredients. The root is associated with a number of benefits, including relieving fever and helping digestion.
The shop has been in the same family for more than 10 generations, originally established in 1819. Each time a new member of the family takes control they change their name to “Kyusuke.”
The building still retains a number of cuts to the beams and supports where local samurai vented their anger after a defeat.
